When taking breaks along the way, we’d often notice a Union Jack flag flying outside a pub or café. And while the flying of the flag often didn’t correspond with political sentiment, the future of the flag, in the event of Scotland voting for independence, was a popular talking point. People wondered if it would remain the same if Scotland votes yes for independence or if a new flag would have to be designed.
Historically the flag has changed, with extra colours added when new countries join the union. So what about if they leave?
