Elsdon Tower
/ Elsdon Tower/
While driving through the village of Elsdon in Northumberland, we come upon a medieval peel tower standing at the top of a road - one of many still remaining in the region.
Peel towers were fortified tower homes and watchtowers, built for defensive purposes or as homes for important individuals, such as the heads of clans, during the notoriously violent period from the late 13th century to the beginning of the 17th century when the Border Reivers dominated.
The one we see in Elsdon looks like it has been converted into a modern home.
